New Delivery Area ZIP Codes for 2024

Be prepared for significant changes to your FedEx and UPS bills. Both carriers have introduced 82 new delivery area surcharge ZIP codes to their existing lists this April 2024. While the addition of 82 ZIP codes to the current 7543 may seem minor, these latest additions have a substantial impact, affecting nearly 1% of the total U.S. population and potentially disrupting your business operations.

The surcharge implementation occurred on April 8, 2024, for UPS deliveries and April 15, 2024, for FedEx deliveries. These delivery area surcharges, ranging from $3.95 to $5.85, were introduced to account for the cost of delivering to various locations. For instance, delivering to a commercial location incurs a $3.95 surcharge, while delivery to a ground residential location costs $5.70. Express package delivery to a residential location carries a $5.85 surcharge. Additionally, fuel surcharges are applicable to delivery area surcharges.

FedEx and UPS already have delivery area surcharges for 7543 ZIP codes nationwide. However, the new additions may particularly affect shippers due to their coverage of densely populated urban areas. These 82 new ZIP codes impact almost 1% of the U.S. population.

Traditionally, delivery area surcharges are primarily applied to regions with lower population density. However, FedEx and UPS are now extending these surcharges to more densely populated areas. Many affected ZIP codes encompass significant urban population centers, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Additionally, a pickup area surcharge will be applied to On-Call Pickup requests at residences within the newly added ZIP codes.
