I got gas last night.
I noticed a little sign on the Mirabito gas pump that said, “Come grow with us! We’re hiring friendly, outgoing and dependable people.”
I stared at the sign while I was filling up, thinking, What a nice way to describe who you’re looking for in a new team member! It made an impression. Before I drove away, I paused my podcast and snapped a picture of that little sign so I could share it with you all.
At AMBC, we often echo the mantra, “Hire attitude; train skills.” And this seems to be trending more and more in the business world as a whole.
Customer service and a positive experience are what sets top businesses apart in today’s ultra-competitive and rapidly innovative world. So much is changing, yet our human nature yearns to trust. We need to provide our customers, first and foremost, with a trustworthy, confident staff.
Don’t get me wrong, your staff’s knowledge and skillset are extremely important. But that can be learned; that can be trained. Personality, initiative, and rapport, however, cannot be trained.
So keep mindful of the type of person that you want representing your business and your brand. When you know who you want, you’ll find who you want–cheerfully giving you change at the Arby’s drive-through, graciously greeting you at the entrance to Walmart, or serving your fried pickles with felicity at Fannie’s Olde Irish Pub.
Build your staff one smile at a time.
